SCHWIMMER, SODDISFATTO PER ELEZIONE ABU MAZEN
(ANSAMED) - NAPOLI, 10 GEN - Walter Schwimmer, ex Segretario Generale del Consiglio d´Europa e attuale segretario generale della Maison de la Mediterranee ha espresso soddisfazione per l´elezione di Abu Mazen a presidente dell´Autorità Palestinese. "L´alta affluenza alle urne e l´elezione di Abbas sono chiare indicazioni di un nuovo corso democratico in Palestina", ha detto Schwimmer. "L´elezione di un leader Palestinese esperto e propenso alla pace piuttosto che alla violenza alimenta la speranza che il processo di pace possa essere ripreso." A tal proposito il segretario generale della Maison de la Mediterranee "ha auspicato che Palestinesi e Israeliani ritornino al più presto al tavolo dei negoziati." Schwimmer ha aggiunto che il cammino verso la pace è lungo e che i palestinesi hanno bisogno dell´appoggio della comunità internazionale per incominciare ad apprendere i principi della democrazia e dei diritti umani. La Maison de la Mediterranee, ha concluso Schwimmer, promuoverà attività sociali, soprattutto tra i giovani, per aiutare il processo di pace. (ANSAMED). KUZ

SCHWIMMER WELCOMES ABU MAZEN AS NEW LEADER OF PNA
(ANSAMED) - NAPLES, JANUARY 10 - The Secretary General of the Naples-based Maison de la Mediterranee and former Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Walter Schwimmer, welcomed today the election of Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) as the new president of the Palestinian Authority. "The turnout of Palestinian voters as well as the result for Mr. Abbas is an indication for a new democratic beginning on the Palestinian side", Schwimmer said. "The election of an experienced Palestinian leader who is committed to peace and alternatives to violence gives hope that the peace process can be revived and the suffering of both the Palestinian and the Israeli people will come to an end. There is still a long way to be gone and the Palestinians will need the support of the international community but in particular of Europe to cope with the principles of pluralist democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Next important step - concluded the Secretary General - will be the parliamentary election which has been already announced". Schwimmer appealed to the Israeli and Palestinian authorities not to loose the momentum and to return as soon as possible to the negotiation table on the basis of the road map of the "quartet". The Maison de la Mediterranee will promote civil society activities, in particular youth initiatives, in the region to foster the peace process.(ANSAMED). COM-KTX
