THEME 2007 Women and Men, Hand in Hand for Gender Equality Each year, a new theme of the award is chosen, inspired by the values of the Barcelona Declaration. In November 2006, during the Meeting of the Heads of Networks at Tampere, the Presidency of the Jury chose the topic ´Women and Men, Hand in Hand for Gender Equality´. The decision was taken due to the celebration in 2007 of the European Year on Equality Between Men and Women. The European Year for Equal Opportunities is aimed to be a “catalyst in raising awareness and building momentum*” and to inform citizens about their right to non-discrimination and equal treatment and to celebrate the benefits of diversity. The four core themes of the European Year proposed by the Commission are: Rights – raising awareness of the right to equality and non-discrimination. Representation – simulating a debate on ways to increase the participation of under-represented groups in society. Recognition – celebrating and accommodating diversity. Respect and tolerance – promoting a more cohesive society. The celebration of the European Year 2007 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, the founding text of the EU and the first mention to the need of eliminating gender inequalities. The Treaty even contained a pro¬vision imposing equal pay. It also concurs with the 10th anniversary of the creation of the UN fund to end violence against women. Unfortunately, although gender equality has been one of the key principles of the European Union, much remains to be done. Torna indietro |
