Well-Being and the Quality of Life in the Historical Centre of
Naples.
The inhabitants of the Old Centre talk about their Quarter through
the images and make proposals for the liveability and well-being
of everybody, both Neapolitans and tourists, pushing the local politicians,
representatives of productive activities and cultural associations
to exchange their views.
The hypotheses gathered will be presented in the form of an integrated
project in order to use Campania Region 2000-2006 P.O.R. funds.
It is an action-research on the quality of life with regard to tourism
impact, an impact which has remarkably increased during these last
years.
The interviewed inhabitants of the Old Centre are presented through
the photo-dialogue technique (Legewie 2000). The exhibited photos
show the places considered meaningful by the respondents, with regard
to their personal history and the quality of life in the quarter.
These photos represent the places which are more often mentioned,
either particularly beautiful and positive or ugly and particularly
negative. For each respondent, the assessment parameter follows
personal criteria. The respondents are inhabitants, representing
the more frequent typologies in the quarter, (student, craftsman,
non authorised park attendant, shopkeeper, tour operator) and “privileged
witnesses” of the relationships and needs of the quarter with
regard to tourism impact.
The aim of this research, carried out in collaboration with the
Offices for Tourism, Architectonic heritage and Social Policies
of the Municipality of Naples, is to become aware of the spontaneous
resources, to understand the needs and expectations of the inhabitants.
In particular, the exhibition is meant to be an opportunity for
developing the dialogue between inhabitants and Administration and
for supporting a bottom-up planning policy.
The exhibition falls within a larger activity of the Mediterranean
Laboratory Foundation, aiming at starting an experimental programme
for the management of the quarters and for making the social society
protagonist, by enhancing social participation processes.
The exhibition Berlin Social Town aims at introducing a participatory
design planning which may be a stimulus and a reference for similar
initiatives. The institution of a training centre for the management
of the quarter is in fact a further objective, involving teachers
and students of the 1st Master organized by the Mediterranean Laboratory
Foundation, as well as the working Group for the management of the
quarter of Berlin University and Senate.
