The Mediterranean Laboratory Foundation of Naples and Alpe
Adria Cinema of Trieste instituted, under the presidency of
Predrag Matvejevic’, the “Sarajevo” Award,
aiming at acknowledging the work of a Bosnian artist.
In its first edition the Prize has been awarded to Abdulah
Sidran, poet and scriptwriter who ranks high in the European
literature of our time, thanks to his creative activity in
the contemporary literary panorama of Bosnia and ex
Yugoslavia.

| The attack on Sarajevo, started
in 1992, leads to tragic heights the work of this poet and
throws a dramatic and prophetic light on his poetry. In the
poems inspired by the siege we can find an extreme function
of poetry. The past, the history of the town, through chroniclers,
witnesses and recorded events, merge with the drama of present
life. This makes up a single body of great poetic beauty,
gives rise to a single investigation, a single question involving
past and present, a single spirit floating. If Sarajevo is
the focus of the present huge crisis, this poetry spreads
in the crisis epicentre and the town is reflected and exalted
in its verses.
